Frequently asked questions about the Hijri calendar

What is the Umm al-Qura calendar?

It is the official Hijri calendar of Saudi Arabia, computed in advance from astronomical rules. It is used for civil and administrative dates there and is the most common reference for Hijri dates.

What is the tabular Islamic calendar?

An arithmetic calendar with months of 30 and 29 days and 11 leap years in every 30 years. It is simple to calculate but can differ by a day or two from the Umm al-Qura calendar and from moon sighting.

Why can Ramadan start on a different day in my country?

Many countries start Ramadan and the Eids after the new crescent moon is sighted, and the sighting can happen a day earlier or later than the calendar date.

Why is my age higher in Hijri years?

A Hijri year has about 354 days, 11 days fewer than a Gregorian year, so a person gains roughly one extra Hijri year every 33 Gregorian years.

How the Hijri date converter works

This page converts dates between the Gregorian calendar and the Hijri (Islamic) calendar in both directions. You can choose the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official civil calendar of Saudi Arabia and the default, or the tabular arithmetic calendar. Besides the converted date, it shows the date in Arabic script, the numeric Hijri date, the length of the Hijri month and a month view with the matching Gregorian dates, where Fridays (Jumu'ah) are highlighted. A table lists the expected dates of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha for the current and the next Hijri year, and an optional date of birth gives your age in Hijri years. It is useful for Muslims, students, travellers and anyone who works with Hijri dates.

The Umm al-Qura calendar follows the tables of Saudi Arabia (King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology) as published in the Java platform, and covers 1300 to 1600 AH, from 12 November 1882 to 24 November 2174. The tabular calendar starts on the civil epoch, 16 July 622 in the Julian calendar, and repeats a 30-year cycle with 11 leap years; odd months have 30 days and even months 29, and the last month has 30 days in a leap year. The two calendars can differ by a day or two. Religious dates such as Ramadan and the Eids are confirmed by moon sighting and may differ by one day in your country. The Hijri age counts the completed Hijri anniversaries of the date of birth.

Example: 24 October 2026 is 13 Jumada al-Ula 1448 AH in the Umm al-Qura calendar, and 12 Jumada al-Ula with the tabular calendar. For the Hijri year 1448 the page shows Ramadan expected to start on Monday 8 February 2027, Eid al-Fitr on 9 March 2027 and Eid al-Adha on 16 May 2027. A person born on 15 May 1990, which is 20 Shawwal 1410 AH, is 37 Hijri years old on that day, against 36 Gregorian years. Limitations: local moon sighting and the change of day at sunset are not modelled, so a religious date may start one day earlier or later than shown, and the Umm al-Qura calendar is limited to 1300 to 1600 AH.
