How the HP 12c simulator works
The HP 12c is the financial calculator that bankers, accountants, real estate professionals and finance students have relied on since the 1980s. This page reproduces it in your browser, with the same keys, a stack-based RPN engine, time value of money (TVM), cash flows (NPV and IRR), amortization, depreciation, bond price and yield, statistics, date arithmetic and programming. It is useful for learning the keystrokes before an exam or a job, for practicing the real workflow, and for solving loan and investment problems without installing anything.
The HP 12c uses Reverse Polish Notation (RPN): you type the numbers first and then the operation, with no parentheses and no equals key. Numbers live in a four-level stack called X, Y, Z and T; ENTER copies X into Y, and each operation consumes X and Y. To add 2 and 3, press 2 ENTER 3 +. The orange f key and the blue g key reach the functions printed above and below each key. For time value of money, enter any four of n, i, PV, PMT and FV, then press the fifth to solve it. Use CHS for the sign: money you pay is negative, money you receive is positive.
Example: to find the monthly payment of a loan of 1000 over 12 months at 1% a month, press 12 n, 1 i, 1000 PV and then PMT. The display shows −88.85: negative because it is a payment you make. Press g END (payments at the end of each period) or g BEG (at the start) to match your contract. Results come from an independent simulator and may differ from the physical device in rounding or rare edge cases, so validate critical figures.
