Frequently asked questions about shift schedules
What does 2/2 or 3/3 mean?
The first number is the days on and the second the days off: 2/2 is two working days followed by two days off, repeated without regard to weekends.
What is a 24/72 schedule?
A 24-hour shift followed by three days off (сутки через трое), common for guards, firefighters and medical staff. Each shift is split between the two calendar days on which it is worked.
How is the monthly norm calculated in Russia?
For a 40-hour week the norm is 8 hours times the working days of the production calendar, minus 1 hour for each working day before a non-working holiday. In 2026 the year norm is 1,972 hours over 247 working days.
What if the hours worked exceed the norm?
With summarised working time the difference over the accounting period is overtime and is paid at a higher rate; the rules depend on the country and the employment contract.
How do I import the .ics file?
Open Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar and import the file: each shift becomes an event at the local time of your device.
How the shift schedule generator works
The shift schedule generator builds a calendar for the most common work rotations: 2/2, 3/3, 24/72 (a 24-hour shift followed by three days off), 5/2 on the business days of your country, or a custom pattern written with the letters D, N and O or as days on and days off. Choose the first month and up to twelve consecutive months, set the start time and the length of each shift, and the page draws one calendar per month with the shifts, the public holidays and the hours worked, compared with the norm. You can then download the schedule as an .ics file for Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar and as an Excel spreadsheet. It is made for shift workers, HR staff and schedulers in Russia and in any other country.
The chosen pattern repeats without interruption from the first day of the cycle, so weekends and holidays do not change a 2/2, 3/3 or 24/72 rotation. Hours are counted on the calendar dates on which they are worked: a night shift or a 24-hour shift that crosses midnight is split between the two days, and the part that falls after the last month is not counted. The monthly norm in Russia is 8 hours times the working days of the production calendar minus 1 hour for each working day before a non-working holiday (Labour Code articles 91, 95 and 112, Order 588n); for 2026 that gives 247 working days and 1,972 hours. Other countries use 8 hours times the business days of the holiday calendar, and 5/2 works exactly those days.
Example: a 2/2 pattern of 12-hour shifts that starts on 1 November 2026 produces 16 shifts and 192 hours of work in November 2026. The Russian norm for that month is 159 hours, from 20 working days with 3 November shortened by one hour, so the schedule is 33 hours above the norm. With summarised working time this difference is checked over the whole accounting period. The generator does not calculate breaks, overtime pay, night-work premiums or accounting periods, and it plans one employee only, so use it as a planning aid and confirm the figures with your employer, your employment contract and the local labour rules.
