How the Chinese calendar works
The Chinese calendar is lunisolar: each month starts on the day of the new moon and lasts 29 days (a small month) or 30 days (a big month), and the year starts on the second new moon after the December solstice (冬至), between January 21 and February 20. This page converts any Gregorian date from January 31, 1900 to January 28, 2101 into the Chinese date and back. Pick a date on the first tab, or enter the Chinese year, month and day on the second one; the result shows an almanac page, the month calendar with the lunar day of every date and the zodiac wheel.
Twelve lunar months last about 354 days, eleven fewer than a solar year, so about every three years a leap month (閏月) is inserted and the year gets 13 months and 383 to 385 days. The leap month repeats the number of the month before it and is the first month that contains no principal solar term. Years are named with the 60-year sexagenary cycle, which combines the 10 heavenly stems (甲, 乙, 丙…) with the 12 earthly branches and their animals; the stem also gives the Wu Xing element and the yin or yang polarity. Days follow the same 60-day cycle without interruption.
The month lengths, the leap months, the Chinese New Year dates and the dates of the 24 solar terms (節氣) come from the tables published by the Hong Kong Observatory for China Standard Time (UTC+8), so in rare cases a date close to midnight in China may fall on another day where you live. The solar terms follow the Sun along the ecliptic and their names describe the seasons of the northern hemisphere. Festivals such as the Spring Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival are placed by their lunar date and never fall in a leap month.
Example: October 17, 2026 is the 8th day of the 9th month (九月初八) of the 丙午 year, the Year of the Fire Horse, on a 甲子 day, the first of the 60-day cycle; that 9th month is a big month of 30 days that began on October 10. The year 2023 had a leap 2nd month (閏二月), so March 22, 2023 is 閏二月初一. Dates before January 31, 1900 or after January 28, 2101 are outside the tables, and the Moon phase icon uses the same mean-cycle model as the lunar calendar.
