Frequently asked questions about sick pay

Which years are used for the average earnings?

The two calendar years before the year in which the sick leave starts: for a sick leave in 2026 they are 2024 and 2025. Each year counts only up to that year's contribution ceiling, and the sum is always divided by 730.

How does the insurance record change the benefit?

With 8 years or more of insurance record you receive 100% of the average earnings, from 5 to 8 years 80% and under 5 years 60%. Under 6 months the benefit for a full month cannot exceed the minimum wage (MROT).

What are the maximum and the minimum in 2026?

For a sick leave that starts in 2026 the average daily earnings are at most 6,827.40 rubles ((2,225,000 + 2,759,000) ÷ 730) and at least 890.73 rubles (27,093 × 24 ÷ 730), before the percentage of the insurance record.

Who pays the sick leave?

For the employee's own illness or injury the employer pays the first 3 calendar days and the Social Fund of Russia (СФР) pays the rest directly to the employee. Both withhold income tax.

How the Russian sick pay calculator works

This calculator estimates the temporary disability benefit (пособие по временной нетрудоспособности, known as больничный) that an employee in Russia receives for their own illness or injury. It splits the gross benefit into the part paid by the employer, which covers the first three calendar days, and the part paid by the Social Fund of Russia (СФР) from the fourth day. It then applies income tax (NDFL) to each payer and shows the net amount you actually receive. It suits employees, accountants and HR staff who want to check a sick-leave certificate before payday.

The method follows Federal Law 255-FZ. Earnings of the two calendar years before the start of the sick leave are each capped at that year's insurance-contribution ceiling (2024: 2,225,000; 2025: 2,759,000; 2026: 2,979,000 rubles), added up and divided by 730. The result cannot be below the minimum wage (MROT, 27,093 rubles in 2026) times 24 divided by 730, and for 2026 it cannot exceed 6,827.40 rubles. The percentage is 60%, 80% or 100% according to the insurance record, with the MROT monthly floor and the cap for records under six months. NDFL uses the resident progressive scale.

Example: earnings of 1,200,000 rubles in 2024 and 1,500,000 rubles in 2025, an insurance record of 8 years or more and 10 days of sick leave from 10 March 2026. The average is 3,698.63 rubles a day, so the employer pays 11,095.89 rubles for 3 days and the Social Fund pays 25,890.41 rubles for 7 days, 36,986.30 rubles in total before NDFL. Limitations: only your own illness or injury is covered; care for a family member, maternity, replacement of years, part-time work and violations of the sick-leave regime are not.
