Severance pay in Italy

Estimate the gross amounts due when an employment contract ends in Italy: TFR severance fund, notice pay, accrued 13th and 14th month pay and untaken leave.

These calculations follow the Italian Civil Code (arts. 2118–2120) and common collective-agreement practice, in force on 10/19/2026.

Amounts are gross, in euros (€), before income tax and social security contributions.

This is an estimate. Collective agreements, the employment contract and individual circumstances can grant more than the statutory minimum; check with the employer, a lawyer or the labour authority before making decisions.

How the Italy severance calculator works

In Italy, the TFR (trattamento di fine rapporto, Civil Code art. 2120) is due on every kind of termination, including resignation. Each year the employer sets aside the annual pay, including the 13th and 14th month, divided by 13.5, minus the 0.5% pension contribution. Months with 15 or more days count as full months. The calculator adds the accrual for your whole service, without the yearly ISTAT revaluation, which is 1.5% plus 75% of inflation. If you enter the fund shown on your payslip at 31 December of last year, it uses that fund plus the accrual of the current year, which gives a closer gross estimate.

Notice (preavviso, art. 2118) is set by the national collective agreement (CCNL), by job level and seniority; for example, the Commercio agreement provides from 15 to 120 days. Enter the number of days in your agreement. When the employer dismisses with notice and pays it in lieu, the calculator pays the notice days divided by 30 times the monthly pay, including the share of the 13th and 14th month. If the notice is worked, no extra amount is added, because the salary is paid normally during the period. Dismissal for just cause, mutual termination and the end of a fixed-term contract carry no notice pay.

Besides the TFR, the calculator adds the items accrued up to the last day of work. The 13th month (tredicesima) accrues from 1 January, and the 14th month (quattordicesima), when your collective agreement provides it, accrues from 1 July; each month with 15 or more days counts. The salary for the days worked in the final month is calculated on a 30-day month, and each untaken leave day is paid at the monthly salary divided by 26. Choose 13 or 14 monthly payments so that the annual pay base is correct.

The amounts are gross estimates. Income tax, the 17% tax on the TFR revaluation and social security contributions are not applied, so the amount you receive will be lower. Special rules, such as protected employees, collective dismissals, company agreements and contract clauses, are not considered. If a court declares a dismissal unlawful, it can set an indemnity of between 6 and 36 months of pay, which this calculator does not include. For a binding figure, check your payslip and your collective agreement, or ask a labour consultant (consulente del lavoro).
