Formulas and notes

Add tax: gross = net × (1 + rate). Remove tax: tax = gross × rate ÷ (1 + rate) and net = gross − tax. For 19%, the tax inside a gross price is 19/119 of it.

The tax is rounded on each line to the smallest unit of the currency (whole yen and won). In Japan many businesses round down; invoices under the qualified invoice system round once per rate.

India: GST has three main rates since 22 September 2025 (5%, 18% and 40%). Within a state the tax is split equally into CGST and SGST; between states it is charged as IGST.

Brazil has no VAT yet. In 2026 the new CBS (0.9%) and IBS (0.1%) only appear on invoices as a test and are offset against PIS/Cofins; the full rates start in 2027 and 2029. To simulate them, use the Brazilian tax reform simulator.

United States: there is no national VAT; state and local sales taxes vary by place, so use the custom rate with the combined rate of your city.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. With 20%, a price of 120 has 100 of net value and 20 of VAT. Do not simply subtract 20% of the gross price.

What are the GST rates in India after the 2025 reform?

Since 22 September 2025 most goods and services pay 5% or 18%, a 40% rate applies to luxury and sin goods, and special rates of 3% (gold and jewellery) and 0.25% (rough precious stones) remain.

What is the VAT rate in Russia in 2026?

The standard rate went up from 20% to 22% on 1 January 2026. The reduced 10% rate for food, children's goods and medicines did not change.

Why does Japan have two consumption tax rates?

Since October 2019 the standard rate is 10% and a reduced 8% applies to food and non-alcoholic drinks (except eating in restaurants) and to newspapers sold by subscription.

Is there VAT in Brazil?

Not yet. The tax reform creates a dual VAT (CBS and IBS) that is tested in 2026 and replaces PIS, Cofins, ICMS and ISS gradually until 2033.

How the VAT calculation works

This calculator is made for shoppers, freelancers, bookkeepers and small business owners anywhere in the world who need to add VAT, GST or IVA to a net price, take it out of a gross price or see only the tax portion. Choose a country preset (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, India, Japan, South Korea, China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates or Mexico) or type a custom rate in any of 15 currencies. You can enter one amount or up to 20 line items, each with its own quantity and rate, and the page totals net, tax and gross amounts and groups them by rate. For India it also splits GST into CGST and SGST or IGST.

To add tax the page uses gross = net × (1 + r), where r is the rate divided by 100. To remove tax it uses tax = gross × r ÷ (1 + r) and net = gross − tax. The tax of each line is rounded to the smallest unit of the currency (cents, or whole yen and won), using the rounding you choose. The presets follow national laws: German UStG, French CGI, Italian DPR 633/1972, Spanish Ley 37/1992, Portuguese CIVA, British VATA 1994, CBIC Notification 9/2025 for India, the Japanese consumption tax law, the Chinese VAT Law of 2026, Russian Federal Law 425-FZ and the Mexican LIVA. Each result shows the date the rates have applied from.

Example: a net price of €100.00 in Germany at 19% gives VAT of €19.00 and a total of €119.00. Going the other way, a gross price of €100.00 contains €84.03 of net value and €15.97 of VAT, because 100 × 0.19 ÷ 1.19 = 15.97. The page is a guide only. It does not handle exemptions, reverse charge, United States sales tax tables or regional rates such as Madeira, the Azores or the Canary Islands, so check the invoice rules of your tax authority or ask an accountant for important decisions.
