Mega da Virada and bolão: frequently asked questions
When is the Mega da Virada drawn?
The Mega da Virada is Mega-Sena's special year-end contest, traditionally drawn on December 31. Caixa announces the contest number, the start of sales and the draw date in advance. Always confirm the date of the current edition on Caixa's official channels.
Does the Mega da Virada prize roll over?
Not to another contest. If no bet matches the six numbers, the top-prize money is shared among the bets with five numbers (quina); if there is no quina either, it goes to the bets with four numbers (quadra). Only when no tier has a winner does the money carry over to the next contest.
Where does the Mega da Virada prize come from?
Under Caixa's rules, 90% of the contest's prize money goes to the six-number tier and 5% to each of the quina and quadra tiers. The top tier also receives the amounts reserved during the year: a share of the prize money of every regular Mega-Sena contest, the amounts accumulated for contests ending in 0 or 5, and any jackpot left over from the previous contest.
Can a bolão play the Mega da Virada?
Yes. Bets cost the same as in a regular Mega-Sena contest, and the bolão follows Caixa's bolão rules: minimum bolão value, 2 to the maximum number of shares, minimum share value and at most 10 games with the same number of numbers. Check the limits at the lottery shop when the special contest opens.
How is a bolão prize split?
The prize of the bolão is divided equally among its shares, so each share receives the prize divided by the number of shares. Each share has its own receipt, and prizes expire 90 days after the draw.
What is the lottery-shop service fee?
When a lottery shop or the Loterias Online portal sells shares of a bolão it organised, it may add a service fee of up to 35% of the share value. The fee pays for the service: it does not buy more bets and does not increase the prize.
Is income tax deducted from the prize?
Yes, above the exemption limit: Caixa withholds 30% income tax at source on lottery prizes, so the amount received is lower than the announced prize. Tick the option to see the net prize per share; small prizes below the limit are paid in full.
How the bolão calculation works
This page is for a group of friends, family or coworkers in Brazil who want to organise a Caixa bolão, a shared bet, of Mega-Sena, Quina or Lotofácil. You choose the lottery, how many numbers each game has, how many games the bolão plays and how many shares the group will split. The page shows the total value of the bolão, the value of each share, the service fee a lottery shop may charge, what every member pays and the best-case odds of the top prize. It also checks your choice against Caixa's official bolão table, with the minimum bolão value, the number of shares, the minimum share and the maximum number of games.
The price of a game is the price of the simple bet (R$ 6.00 for Mega-Sena, R$ 3.00 for Quina and R$ 3.50 for Lotofácil, Caixa's table since July 2025) multiplied by the number of simple bets C(n, b) contained in the numbers you pick. The bolão value is the game price times the number of games. The share value is the bolão value divided by the shares and rounded to the cent. The service fee is the share value times the fee percentage, up to 35%, and each share pays the share value plus the fee. The prize per share is the prize divided by the shares, optionally minus 30% income tax withheld at source. The limits come from Caixa's bolão rules table, checked on 2026-10-24.
Example: a Mega-Sena bolão with 2 games of 7 numbers. Each game costs R$ 42.00, so the bolão is worth R$ 84.00. Split into 6 shares, each share is worth R$ 14.00. With a 20% service fee of R$ 2.80, each member pays R$ 16.80 and the group pays R$ 100.80 in total. The 2 games hold 14 simple bets, so the best-case odds of the top prize are 1 in 3,575,990. If the bolão won R$ 100,000,000.00, each share would receive R$ 16,666,666.67 gross, or R$ 11,666,666.67 after the 30% income tax. This is an estimate: Caixa's receipt rules prevail, a bolão does not improve the odds of each bet, and you should play responsibly.
