Frequently asked questions about date differences
Should I include the end date?
Leave it off to measure the time between two dates, for example an age or a deadline. Turn it on to count every calendar day of a period, for example a trip from Monday to Friday, which then counts 5 days instead of 4.
How are months counted?
A month is counted from a day to the same day of the next month. When that day does not exist, such as 31 February, the last day of the month is used.
Does daylight saving time change the result?
No. The calculator counts calendar days and multiplies them by 24 hours, so the clock change in spring or autumn does not affect the result.
Can I count only working days?
Yes, with the Business Days Calculator, which removes weekends and the public holidays of the country and region you choose.
How the date difference calculator works
This calculator tells you how much time lies between two calendar dates and shows the answer in several ways at once: total days, weeks and days, months and days, years, months and days, and the total number of hours and minutes. You can choose whether the end date counts as a full day. It is useful for deadlines, contract and notice periods, trips, project schedules, pregnancy or course durations, and for anyone who simply wants to know how many days remain until a date or have passed since one. Leave the end date blank to use today.
The number of days is the difference between the two calendar dates, plus one day when you include the end date. Months are counted from a day to the same day of the following month, and when that day does not exist the last day of the month is used, following the Gregorian rules of the ISO calendar. Hours are the days multiplied by 24 and minutes are the days multiplied by 1,440, so daylight saving changes never add or remove an hour. If the end date comes before the start date, the two dates are swapped and a notice tells you.
Take 1 January 2026 and 31 December 2026. Without the end date there are 364 days, which is 52 weeks, or 11 months and 30 days, or 8,736 hours and 524,160 minutes. Including the end date gives 365 days, which is exactly 1 year. The calculator works with dates only, so clock times and time zones are not used. If you need to leave out weekends and public holidays, use the Business Days Calculator instead, and to move a date forward or back by a number of days, use the Add or Subtract Days calculator.
