Final Grade Calculator

Find the minimum score you need on the final exam to reach your target grade.

This calculator assumes that the final grade is the weighted average of your current grade and the final exam. Check your course rules: some courses also require a minimum score on the final itself.

Frequently asked questions about the final exam grade

How do I calculate the grade I need on the final?

Subtract the part of the final grade you already have (current grade × weight of the coursework) from your target, then divide by the weight of the final exam.

What if the result is above the maximum grade?

Then even a perfect score on the final cannot bring you to the target. The page tells you so and shows the best final grade you can still reach.

What weight should I enter?

Enter the share of the final exam in the course grade, for example 40 when the final counts for 40% and the coursework for 60%. Your syllabus or school rules give this number.

How the final grade calculator works

This page tells you the minimum score you need on the final exam to finish a course with the grade you want. You enter the grade you have so far, the weight of the final exam as a percentage of the course grade, and your target. The calculator answers with the score you need, and it says plainly when the target can no longer be reached, even with a perfect final, or when it is already guaranteed, even with the worst possible final. It works on nine grading scales, including the German scale where 1.0 is the best grade, and on letter grades such as A-, B+, A0 or O, so it is useful to students everywhere.

The course grade is the weighted average of your current grade and the final exam: final = current × (1 − w) + exam × w, where w is the weight of the final divided by 100. Solving for the exam gives the score needed: (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. The result is compared with the best and the worst grade of the scale to decide whether the target is reachable, unreachable or guaranteed. The needed score is rounded up (down on the German scale) so that reaching it is always enough. Letters are converted to grade points before the calculation, for example A = 4.0 in the United States, O = 10 in India and A+ = 4.5 in South Korea.

Example on the 0 to 10 scale: your current grade is 6.5, the final exam weighs 40% and you want a 7. The coursework keeps 60% of the grade, so it contributes 6.5 × 0.6 = 3.9 points. You need 7 − 3.9 = 3.1 more points from the final, which is worth 40%, so the score needed is 3.1 ÷ 0.4 = 7.75. With a perfect 10 on the final your grade would be 7.9, and with a 0 it would be 3.9. Limitations: some courses also demand a minimum score on the final itself, apply extra rounding or use other weighting rules, so check your syllabus.
