Frequently asked questions about grade averages
What is the difference between a weighted and a simple average?
The simple average treats every course the same. The weighted average gives more weight to courses with more credits or hours, which is how GPA, CGPA and most university averages are computed.
How is a US GPA calculated?
Each letter grade is turned into grade points (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 and so on), multiplied by the course credits, added up and divided by the total credits.
How do I convert my CGPA to a percentage?
It depends on who asks. CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5, many engineering universities follow the AICTE rule (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, and some accept CGPA × 10. Choose the formula your institution requires.
Why is a lower grade better in Germany?
The German scale runs from 1.0 (sehr gut, very good) to 5.0 (nicht ausreichend, fail); 4.0 is the lowest passing grade.
How the grade average calculator works
This page calculates your weighted grade average, or GPA, from up to 20 courses. For each course you type the grade and, if you want, the credits or weight, and you choose the grading scale of your school: 0 to 10 (Brazil and Mexico), the US 4.0 letter scale, India's 10-point CGPA, France 0 to 20, Germany 1.0 to 5.0, Italy 18 to 30, South Korea 4.5, Russia 2 to 5 or a custom scale with your own limits. It is made for school and university students, and for applicants who need to summarize their grades. Letters such as A-, B+, O or 30L are accepted on the scales that use them.
The weighted average is the sum of each grade multiplied by its credits, divided by the total credits; the simple average ignores the credits. Letter marks become points before the calculation: US A = 4.0 down to F = 0, UGC India O = 10 down to F = 0, Korea A+ = 4.5 down to F = 0 and Italy 30L = 30. Germany cuts the average after the first decimal without rounding and names the grade (sehr gut, gut, and so on). France shows the mention (assez bien, bien, très bien). For India the CGPA becomes a percentage with CBSE × 9.5, AICTE (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 or × 10. For Italy the base 110 starting mark is the average × 110 ÷ 30.
Example from the UGC guidelines: four courses with grades A, B, A and B+ and 6, 6, 6 and 2 credits. The sum is 8 × 6 + 6 × 6 + 8 × 6 + 7 × 2 = 146, and 146 ÷ 20 = 7.30 CGPA, which is 69.35% with the CBSE formula. Limitations: schools and universities may use their own rounding, weights, retake rules and values for honors such as the Italian lode, so treat the result as a guide and confirm it with your institution before sending it in an application.
