Frequently asked questions
What is the nisab and which standard should I use?
The nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat is due: 85 g of gold or 595 g of silver. Many scholars recommend the silver standard because it is lower and benefits more people in need; others use gold for wealth held mainly in cash. Choose the standard your scholar recommends.
Why does the lunar year matter?
Zakat is due once the wealth has stayed at or above the nisab for one lunar (Hijri) year, the hawl, of about 354 days. Many people pick a fixed date, such as a day in Ramadan, and calculate every year on that date.
How is gold of different karats counted?
Each weight is converted to pure gold by its purity: 22K counts 22/24, 21K counts 21/24 and 18K counts 18/24 of its weight. The pure-gold weight is then valued at the 24K price per gram.
How should I treat shares and investment funds?
If you bought them only to sell, pay zakat on the full market value. If you hold them for the long term or for dividends, zakat is due on your share of the company's zakatable assets; when that is unknown, 25% of the market value is a common estimate.
Which debts can I deduct?
Deduct debts and bills that are due now, such as overdue rent, bills and the instalments currently payable. Long-term debts, such as the future instalments of a mortgage, are usually not deducted in full.
How the zakat calculation works
This page helps Muslims estimate their annual zakat. Enter your cash, bank and savings balances, gold by weight and karat, silver, shares and investment funds, trade goods and money owed to you that you expect to collect, then subtract the debts due now. Choose from 15 currencies. The gold and silver prices are editable and prefilled with reference prices per gram, so you can replace them with the prices of your local market on the day you calculate.
The net zakatable wealth is your zakatable assets minus the liabilities due now. It is compared with the nisab, which is 85 g of gold or 595 g of silver valued at the price per gram. When the net wealth reaches the nisab and a full lunar year has passed, zakat is 2.5% of the net wealth. Gold of 22, 21 or 18 karats is converted to pure gold by its purity. Shares bought to sell count at market value; shares held long term count only a part of it, 25% by default.
Example: cash US$ 5,000, bank US$ 20,000, 50 g of 22K and 10 g of 18K gold (53.33 g of pure gold, worth US$ 6,898.13), 200 g of silver (US$ 350.90), shares for trading US$ 10,000 and receivables US$ 2,000, with debts of US$ 3,000. The net wealth is US$ 41,249.03, above the gold nisab of US$ 10,993.90, so the zakat is US$ 1,031.23. The result depends on the reference prices, scholars differ on some assets such as jewelry, and you should confirm the final amount with a qualified scholar.
