How Vedic Numerology works

Vedic numerology, known in India as Anka Jyotish, relates the digits 1 to 9 to the nine grahas of the Indian astrological tradition: Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Rahu, Mercury, Venus, Ketu, Saturn and Mars. From a birth date it derives two numbers: Mulank, the “psychic number” tied to the day of birth, and Bhagyank, the “destiny number”, tied to the whole date. This tool shows both, with the ruling planet and the traditional description of each.

Mulank is the day of the month reduced to a single digit by repeatedly adding its digits (day 28: 2 + 8 = 10 and 1 + 0 = 1). Bhagyank adds all the digits of day, month and year (DDMMYYYY) and reduces the total in the same way. Unlike other systems, no master numbers are kept: the result is always from 1 to 9. The planet comes from a fixed table: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars. The date is read in the Gregorian calendar.

Example: on 15 January 1990, the day 15 gives 1 + 5 = 6, so Mulank is 6 (Venus). The digits of the date add up to 1 + 5 + 0 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 26, and 2 + 6 = 8, so Bhagyank is 8 (Saturn).
