Frequently asked questions
What counts as a business day?
A business day is a day of the working week that is not a public holiday of the chosen country or region. The working week is Monday to Friday in most countries and Sunday to Thursday in Saudi Arabia, where the weekend is Friday and Saturday.
Are Carnival and Corpus Christi business days in Brazil?
Nationally they are optional days (ponto facultativo), so they count as business days. The state of Rio de Janeiro made Carnival Tuesday a holiday (Lei 5.243/2008) and Corpus Christi a holiday from 2026 (Lei 11.002/2025); choose the state to apply them. Many cities also declare them municipal holidays.
What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?
It depends on the country. US federal holidays move to Friday or Monday, the UK grants substitute days, and Japan and South Korea give substitute holidays. China and Russia move days off and add make-up working days by decree. Brazil keeps the date, except Acre and Santa Catarina, which move some state holidays.
Why are some holidays marked as expected?
Islamic holidays such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha follow the Hijri lunar calendar. The page uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, but governments confirm the dates close to the holiday, so they can move by one or two days.
Are municipal holidays included?
No. City anniversaries and local religious holidays change from city to city, so check your city hall calendar and subtract those days when they fall on working days.
Can I use the result for legal or court deadlines?
Use it as a guide. Courts and agencies publish their own calendars with closures, suspended deadlines and recess periods, and procedural laws define whether the first and last days count. Always check the official calendar of the court or agency.
How the business days calculator works
This business days calculator does two jobs. It counts the working days between two dates, and it finds the date that is a given number of business days after or before a start date, which is the usual way to read a deadline such as 30 business days from today. It is made for HR and payroll teams, lawyers, accountants, students and anyone with a deadline. Choose one of 68 countries and, where the law differs inside a country, the region: the Brazilian states, the German Länder, England, Scotland or Northern Ireland, and the main Indian states. The result also lists every holiday inside the period.
A day is a business day when it is not a weekend day of the chosen country and not a national, regional or observed holiday. The weekend is Saturday and Sunday in most countries and Friday and Saturday in Saudi Arabia. Decreed swaps, such as the Chinese 调休 and the Russian production calendar, turn weekend days into working days, and optional days such as the Brazilian ponto facultativo count as working days. Easter-based holidays use the Gregorian computus, lunar holidays use Chinese calendar tables, and Islamic holidays use the Umm al-Qura Hijri calendar and are marked as expected. Brazil follows Lei 662/1949, Lei 6.802/1980 and Lei 14.759/2023, and the United States follows 5 U.S.C. 6103. When you add days, the start date is never counted.
Example: Brazil, national holidays only, from November 1 to November 30, 2026, counting both ends. The period has 30 calendar days and 9 weekend days. Two holidays fall on working days: All Souls' Day on Monday, November 2, and Black Consciousness Day on Friday, November 20, while the Proclamation of the Republic falls on Sunday, November 15. That leaves 19 business days, or 152 working hours at 8 hours a day. Limits: municipal holidays and company-specific days off are not included, Islamic dates are expected dates until the government confirms them, and for years without published decrees only the holidays fixed by law are counted.
