Retirement plan

Find out how much you could live on each month when you retire, in today's money, from what you have saved, your monthly deposits, the expected return and inflation.

How much do you have saved today?

Add up all the money you already have saved or invested for your retirement. If you have nothing saved yet, enter 0 (zero).

How much will you save each month?

This is the new money you will deposit every month, on top of what you already have. It is added to your balance together with that month's earnings — the earnings stay invested and do not come out of your pocket. If you have nothing saved today, this amount is required.

How much do you expect your investments to earn per year?

Enter the percentage you expect to earn in one year. Example: type 10 for 10% a year. The calculator turns it into the equivalent rate for each month using compound interest.

What average inflation do you expect per year?

This is how much prices are expected to rise each year, on average, from now on. Example: type 4.5 for 4.5% a year (type 0 to ignore inflation). It shows what your money will be worth in today's purchasing power.

How long until you want to retire?

Count from today, in years or in months. This is when you stop making deposits and start living on the earnings.

How the retirement plan calculator works

This calculator estimates the monthly income your savings could pay you when you retire, measured in today's money. You tell it how much you have saved, how much you will deposit every month, the yearly return you expect, the yearly inflation you expect and how long until you retire, in years or months. Each month the balance earns interest, and your deposit is added on top of those earnings, which stay invested.

The yearly rates become monthly rates with compound interest: monthly rate = (1 + yearly rate)^(1/12) − 1, never a simple division by 12. Month 1 starts with what you have today; every following balance is the previous balance + deposit + earnings, and the month's earnings are balance × monthly return. Inflation accumulates month by month, and net earnings are the earnings divided by (1 + accumulated inflation): what that income buys at today's prices. The last row is the first month of retirement, with no deposit; its net earnings are the projected retirement income.

Example: 100,000 saved, 1,000 deposited per month, 10% a year return, 4.5% a year inflation and 30 years to go. At retirement the balance reaches about 3,807,783.51, which earns about 30,363.80 a month; in today's money that is about 8,077.45 a month.
