Italian Fiscal Code (Codice Fiscale)

Generate the Italian fiscal code from personal data, or decode and validate an existing code.

Only the Agenzia delle Entrate issues official fiscal codes. This calculator uses the public algorithm: a real code may differ (for example after omocodia), so always use the code on your tessera sanitaria or Agenzia certificate.

Frequently asked questions

How is the fiscal code built?

Three letters from the surname, three from the given name, the last two digits of the year, a letter for the month, the day of birth (plus 40 for women), the cadastral code of the municipality or Z code of the country, and a check character.

Can a calculated code be wrong?

Yes. When two people share the same data, the Agenzia delle Entrate gives one of them a code with letters in place of some digits (omocodia). Data recorded differently by the registry office also changes the code.

How do I get an official fiscal code?

Italian citizens receive it at birth registration. Foreigners request it from an office of the Agenzia delle Entrate, an Italian consulate abroad or, for residence permits, the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione.

What if I was born in a municipality that no longer exists?

Enter the name the municipality had on your date of birth: the list includes suppressed and merged municipalities with their old cadastral codes.

How the fiscal code calculator works

The codice fiscale is the 16-character identifier that Italy uses for taxes, the national health service (tessera sanitaria), employment and bank contracts. This page does three things: it generates the code from a surname, given name, date of birth, sex and place of birth, it decodes an existing code back into sex, date and place, and it validates the final check character. Keep in mind that only the Agenzia delle Entrate issues official codes. The result here follows the public algorithm and is meant as a cross-check, not as a replacement for the code printed on your official documents.

The method comes from DM 23/12/1976 and DPR 605/1973, art. 1. The surname gives three letters (consonants first, then vowels, padded with X); the given name does the same, except that with four or more consonants it uses the first, third and fourth. Then come the last two digits of the year, a month letter (A B C D E H L M P R S T for January to December), and the day of birth, plus 40 for women. The place is the cadastral (Belfiore) code of the comune, or a Z code for a foreign country. The check character uses the odd and even position tables, modulo 26. For omocodia, digits are replaced from the right by the letters L M N P Q R S T U V. Data: ANPR and ISTAT.

Example: Mario Rossi, male, born on 01/01/1980 in Rome (cadastral code H501). The surname gives RSS, the given name gives MRA, the year is 80, the month letter for January is A, the day is 01, and the place is H501. These 15 characters produce the check character U, so the code is RSSMRA80A01H501U. Limitations: letters outside the Latin alphabet are dropped, foreign states that ceased before 2002 may be missing from the list (type the Z code directly), and the code does not store the century, so a decoded date can also belong to the previous century.
