PPF Calculator (India)

Maturity value of a Public Provident Fund account over 15 years, with yearly deposits, the current rate and 5-year extensions.

India — Public Provident Fund Scheme, 2019, and the small savings rate notified by the Ministry of Finance (7.1% for October–December 2026), as checked on 10/24/2026.

Estimate for guidance only: check the official sources or a licensed professional before relying on it.

Deposits and rate
When you deposit

The government revises the PPF rate every quarter; this projection keeps the rate you enter for the whole period. Interest is earned on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month.

The account matures 15 full financial years after the end of the year you open it, so deposits are possible in up to 16 financial years (the opening year plus 15). Like most bank calculators, this one assumes 15 yearly deposits.

Extension after maturity (optional)
During the extension

After 15 years the account can be extended in blocks of 5 years, with or without new deposits, by applying within one year of maturity.

Frequently asked questions

Why deposit before 5 April?

Interest for a month is paid on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of that month. A deposit made by 5 April earns interest for the whole financial year.

Can I withdraw before 15 years?

Partial withdrawals are allowed from the seventh financial year within set limits, and premature closure is allowed after five years only for specific reasons. This calculator assumes no withdrawals.

Is PPF interest taxable?

No. PPF interest and the maturity amount are tax-free; the deduction for deposits is available only in the old tax regime.

How the PPF calculator works

The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed savings scheme in India. An account matures after 15 financial years, accepts between ₹500 and ₹1,50,000 in each financial year, and can then be extended in blocks of 5 years, with or without new deposits. This calculator projects the balance year by year from your yearly deposit, the interest rate and the optional extension. It shows the maturity value after 15 years, the value after the extension, the total deposits and the interest earned, and draws a chart of the deposits against the balance so you can see how compounding takes over in the later years.

PPF interest is calculated every month at the notified rate on the lowest balance between the close of the 5th day and the end of the month, and it is credited at the end of the financial year, so it compounds once a year. For one deposit by 5 April, the interest of a year is (opening balance + deposit) × rate. For one twelfth deposited by the 5th of every month, it is rate ÷ 12 × (12 × opening balance + 78 × monthly deposit). The Ministry of Finance notifies the rate every quarter: it is 7.1% for October–December 2026. PPF has EEE status: deposits qualify for the deduction of section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (old section 80C) in the old regime, and the interest and the maturity amount are tax-free.

Example: a deposit of ₹1,50,000 by 5 April every year at 7.1% grows to ₹ 40,68,209.22 after 15 years. You deposited ₹ 22,50,000.00 and earned ₹ 18,18,209.22 of tax-free interest. Depositing every month instead gives a lower value, because part of the money of each year joins the account later. The result is a projection: it keeps the rate you enter for all years although the government may change it every quarter, and it does not model withdrawals, loans against the balance or premature closure.
