Frequently asked questions about ideal weight
Which ideal weight formula is the most accurate?
None of them is exact. Devine, Robinson and Miller give similar values; the BMI range is wider and is the one health agencies use for adults.
Why does the result not depend on my current weight?
The formulas and the BMI range only use height and sex. Use the BMI calculator to see where your current weight falls.
Is a weight outside the range unhealthy?
Not necessarily. Muscle mass, age and body shape matter. Ask a doctor or a registered dietitian for a personal assessment.
How the ideal weight calculator works
This calculator takes your height and sex and shows two things for adults: the healthy weight range that matches a body mass index (BMI) from 18.5 to 24.9, and the ideal body weight given by three classic formulas, Devine, Robinson and Miller. Enter your height in centimeters, or in feet and inches on the English (US) version of the page, choose your sex and press Calculate. The weight appears in kilograms, or in pounds in the US version. Use the links under the results to go on to the BMI and calorie calculators and see how your current weight and daily energy needs compare.
The BMI range is computed as 18.5 times your height in meters squared up to 24.9 times your height in meters squared, the normal band of the World Health Organization for adults. The three formulas add a fixed weight for every inch above 5 ft (152.4 cm). Devine (1974) uses 50 kg for men and 45.5 kg for women plus 2.3 kg per inch. Robinson (1983) uses 52 kg plus 1.9 kg for men and 49 kg plus 1.7 kg for women. Miller (1983) uses 56.2 kg plus 1.41 kg for men and 53.1 kg plus 1.36 kg for women. They only apply from 5 ft up.
Example: a man 175 cm tall (68.9 in) has a healthy BMI range of 56.7 to 76.3 kg. The formulas give 70.5 kg with Devine, 68.9 kg with Robinson and 68.7 kg with Miller. These numbers are estimates: they ignore muscle mass, frame size and age, and the formulas were first made to dose medicines. The calculator is not meant for children, teenagers, pregnant women or people with medical conditions. For a personal weight goal, talk to a doctor or a registered dietitian, who can look at your whole health picture.
